Can Claude Code design a PCB?
Claude Code can assist with PCB design when connected to electronics tools. Adom Hydrogen supplies a workspace for the agent, parts-search tools, component resources and bridges to desktop CAD. An agent can work on project files and use the operations its installed tools expose. This does not guarantee a finished, electrically correct board from a single prompt.
Give the agent a bounded job
Begin with requirements: supply range, interfaces, load current, board dimensions and manufacturing constraints. Ask for a proposed circuit and component choices before layout. Then work through the schematic, placement, routing and firmware in reviewable steps.
For example: “Find three in-stock regulators for this supply range. Compare their datasheet limits and required external components. Wait for my choice before changing the schematic.” The Adom parts-search tools connect to distributor catalogs; availability should be checked again before ordering.
Review the engineering
Check pin mapping, footprints, electrical ratings and thermal assumptions against manufacturer documentation. Run ERC and DRC, inspect the generated manufacturing files, and test the assembled hardware. A clean rule-check report only establishes that the configured rules passed.
Inspect a published KiCad example
Adom’s ESC G431 placement and routing report links the board fixtures, plans, logs and recordings for a motor-controller project. Its placement exercise used a 149-part board, with 27 interface parts fixed and 122 parts available to move. The report retains inherited library errors and documents rejected routing attempts as well as later work.
Treat this as a documented Adom demonstration, not an independent product benchmark. The report explains that later runs benefited from bridge fixes and setup completed during earlier runs, so the headline times do not isolate model performance. Inspect the inputs and diagnostics before drawing conclusions about your own board. This article does not independently reproduce the run or establish that the resulting hardware was validated.
Your editor and workspace can run locally, while cloud AI providers and online services still receive the requests sent to them. Review their data settings for your project.
